do you need electrolytes after drinking alcohol?

short answer: it helps. long answer: it helps, but it's not magic and anyone telling you an electrolyte drink "cures" a big night is selling you something. (we sell electrolytes. we're still not going to tell you that.)

here's what actually happens to your fluid levels when you drink alcohol, what electrolytes can and can't do about it, and when to have them.

why drinking leaves you dehydrated

alcohol suppresses vasopressin, the hormone that tells your kidneys to hang onto water. less vasopressin means more trips to the bathroom, and more fluid going out than coming in. a hot venue, a dance floor and a few hours of forgetting to drink water don't help either.

that fluid doesn't leave on its own. sodium and potassium go with it which is why a big night can leave you feeling flat even after you've smashed a glass of water.

what electrolytes actually do the next day

electrolytes help your body hold onto and use the fluid you're putting back in. plain water rehydrates; water with electrolytes rehydrates and replaces the minerals you lost along the way. that's the whole job, and it's a useful one. more on the science bit here.

what they won't do: undo the night, speed up how fast your body processes alcohol, or make up for a lack of sleep. no drink does. if one claims to, be suspicious.

when to have them

  • between drinks: the cheapest move in the book alternate with water.
  • before bed: a serve before you sleep gives your body something to work with overnight.
  • the morning after: mix a serve with cold water and ice, eat something, and take it slow.

why we built BLEND 001 for this exact moment

a big night isn't just a fluid problem. we built BLEND 001 as an electrolyte powder with a coconut water base and sodium + potassium, plus B1, B6 + B12, vitamin C and taurine because the morning after usually asks for more than salt and water.

no added sugar, 15 serves a pouch, and a 10g serve designed to be drunk long and cold.

the honest bit

the best thing you can do for the morning after is drink a bit less the night before, eat something, and drink water as you go. electrolytes make the rest of that work better. if you're unwell, vomiting or can't keep fluids down, talk to a GP or pharmacist that's a different conversation.
